Beijing celebrates traditional Russian holiday Maslenitsa in style

“People from many countries came together without prejudice and just enjoyed the spirit of the folk festival,” one of the visitors said.

The Russian capital is currently hosting the traditional Russian holiday “Maslenitsa”, an activity that is part of the decision by the leaders of the two countries to declare 2024 and 2025 intercultural years, the Pervy channel reported on Saturday.

The celebrations dedicated to the ‘Winter Farewell’ took place at the Beijing Exhibition Centre. The organizers prepared various typical delicacies and a spectacular entertainment program to introduce the residents of the Chinese capital to Russian traditions and culture.

“I enjoy this event. People from many countries came together without prejudice and just enjoyed the spirit of the folk festival,” said one of the participants.

Visitors to the event get to meet the heroes of Russian folk tales, listen to folk songs, and dance to the traditional ‘khorovód’. The most popular treat for the Beijingers was blinis, thin pancakes served with condensed milk. The big surprise was the popular Russian song ‘Katiusha’ sung in Chinese by a group of artists.

“I think the most interesting thing is the colorful music and dance. For me, it’s like gaining new knowledge and experience. Also, the pancakes are very tasty,” said a young Chinese girl. “I am immersed in such a joyful atmosphere, I think it is a special and unforgettable experience for me,” she added.

Last February, Chinese New Year was celebrated in the center of Moscow. “Muscovites were very impressed, it was beautiful, bright, and tasty, and we decided to do this mutual exchange. We hope that our Chinese friends will also enjoy everything,” said Yulia Kapranova, head of the secretariat of the Russian-Chinese Committee for Friendship, Peace and Development.
