As U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accelerates its efforts to deport Latino immigrants, Pressenza, in collaboration with Tsuru for Solidarity, is sponsoring a screening of the documentary Borderland | The Line Within, hosted by Rosa Luxemburg in New York City.
The United States border is not just a geographic location—it is everywhere. It resides within every undocumented immigrant family, a constant threat that at any moment they could be apprehended, detained, deported, and have their lives torn apart. Borderland | The Line Within not only exposes the profitable business of immigration enforcement and its devastating human cost but also weaves together the stories of immigrant heroines and heroes. These individuals resist oppression, illuminate a path forward, and work to build a movement that challenges the border industrial complex while upholding the human rights of all.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operates with a workforce of approximately 20,000 employees, overseeing immigration enforcement and cross-border crime investigations. It is structured into two main divisions: Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), responsible for apprehending, detaining, and deporting undocumented individuals, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which targets transnational crime such as human trafficking and smuggling. ICE manages a network of detention facilities with a daily capacity of 20,000 to 50,000 detainees, including privately operated centers and local jails under contract. For fiscal year 2024, its budget is approximately $9.55 billion, supporting operations, detention facilities, Alternatives to Detention programs, and deportation efforts.
