Simultaneous Mother’s* Rebellion action in more than 26 countries on six continents.

In response to the growing threat that climate chaos poses to all societies and our planet, the Mothers* Rebellion movement has called on mothers and allies around the world to demonstrate and demand an immediate end to the use of fossil fuels. Protests will take place simultaneously in more than 26 countries on 6 continents, coinciding with the international End Fossil Fuels call the week of 15-23 September. In Spain, the action will take place in the Plaza de Aluche in Madrid just after the demonstration against logging called by “Salvemos Los Parques” on Saturday 23 September at 13:30.
The action will consist of a sit-in circle of mothers and carers of all kinds, accompanied by their children, in a public space, holding signs with messages related to the climate crisis and political inaction. With these actions the mothers want to convey their refusal to look the other way or give up, and their determination to do all they can to leave a habitable planet for future generations. They demand an urgent, just and fair end to fossil fuels, urging politicians to act in solidarity with the people who are already suffering the effects of climate change in different territories. “We are mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters and their allies around the world. We will not give up the fight for a sustainable present and future for current and future generations. We want to be able to look our daughters in the eye and say that we really do all we can.
“We are rebelling for life, because governments are failing to act on the climate crisis. Even though they have signed a multitude of pacts and agreements, they are continually breaking them.” Historically, mothers have protected and cared for the youngest and most vulnerable in society. Our role must continue today to protect and preserve the lives of our children and all children on the planet, which is our only home. And we know that those least responsible for the climate crisis are also the most affected. We believe in the power of mothers and all caregivers to demand and build climate justice. We point to the disproportionate impact climate change has on lower income communities and communities of colour, on women, and on the people and places least responsible for our climate emergency.”

The summer of 2023 has been the hottest summer the world has ever seen, far exceeding all previous records. We have seen an increase in extreme events around the world: droughts followed by severe storms causing floods in Spain and deaths across the country, and catastrophes in many other countries such as Greece and Libya. We have also seen intense heat waves around the world, with destructive cyclones and devastating forest fires in Tenerife, Canada and Maui.
