New audiovisual tributes to the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela

A pleasant and significant surprise awaits travellers arriving at Brasilia International Airport. In the arrivals area, they will have the pleasure of visiting the exhibition “Mandla: Global Icon of Reconciliation”.

Organised by the Brazil Africa Institute in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the exhibition is a profound tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela, a leading figure in the global struggle for justice, equality and peace. Through a collection of 50 photographic panels, visitors will embark on an evocative journey through the extraordinary life of this revolutionary leader.

“We are honoured to bring this inspiring exhibition to Brazil, which offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of Nelson Mandela’s indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to peace,” says Professor João Bosco Monte, President of the Brazil Africa Institute.

In addition to highlighting Mandela’s reconciling character, the exhibition offers a multifaceted portrait of the former South African president’s life, from his early activism to his historic presidency.

The exhibition, which is open to the public, can be seen at the capital’s airport until 10 June, and will then tour several Brazilian cities between 2024 and 2025.

Another major tribute to the South African icon is the five-part series “Mandela: Life”, which will be released worldwide on 27 April 2025, the 31st anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections.

South African filmmaker Mandla Dube will bring the extraordinary life of Nelson Mandela to the screen, including never-before-seen footage, with permission from the Mandela Foundation to include the historic leader’s voice, recreated from archival footage.

This documentary portrait aims to inspire a new generation by showing how South Africa rose to the challenge of overcoming its deep racial divisions through ethical leadership and activism for justice.

As global tensions rise, the producers believe Mandela’s story shows that healing is possible even in the face of persistent hatred.
