“The Art of SHE: Diverse Expressions of Womanhood” Exhibit at the Imahica Art Gallery

With March being International Women’s Month, Imahica Art Gallery presents, The Art of She, an empowering and thought-provoking exhibition featuring the works of a wide array of women artists, which opened on March 15 and will be on display until March 31. The exhibit showcases a wide range of different works from the hearts and hands of 15 women artists.

The guiding sentiment for this exhibition is a phrase said by Frida Kahlo, “I paint my own reality” which she uttered when she was labeled a surrealist. Kahlo, along with other women artists like Pacita Abad, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, and Paula Rego is known for creating deeply personal works that reflect their individual life stories. These artists often draw from their own experiences, transforming emotions, memories, and intimate moments into powerful visual expressions.

An hour before the exhibit opening, there was an enlightening round table exchange of the artists entitled “Beyond the Canvas—Women, Creativity and Change”. The artists shared their experiences, thoughts, and insights, freely and openly—what it was like to be an artist, how purpose in life was and can be found through art, how one could understand, accept, and express oneself as a woman artist, how art served as a life translator, able to convert challenges and simplify life’s joys, how it helped those working with an advocacy use their art to share it, how being part of a group helped support each other and make a path in a male-dominated art world, not to be eaten by fear and be intimidated but just step ahead, to believe in oneself as authenticity was most important.

The “Art of She” exhibit showcases a collection of art that delves into the diverse and deeply personal expressions of womanhood, capturing the full spectrum of female experiences. From the quiet joy of motherhood to the raw intensity of personal struggle, the artworks on display reflect the emotional depth, strength, and resilience of women across the globe.

The exhibit, inspired by trailblazing icons like Frida Kahlo, Tracey Emin, and Louise Bourgeois brings together a dynamic range of mediums and styles—graceful metal sculptures, delicate watercolors, and surrealist paintings. A wide array of works challenge traditional narratives and invite you to explore the multifaceted nature of womanhood.

Here are just some of the works of art on display:

Whether celebrating triumph or reflecting on loss, this exhibit highlights the profound and universal stories that women share so art lovers can experience the transformative power of art through the eyes of women.

From the joyful bond of a mother and child to the intense pain of childbirth and the overwhelming sorrow of losing a child, the artists channel the full emotional spectrum of a woman’s life through their work. Their art serves as an outlet for both personal struggles and triumphs, translating private experiences into universal, resonant messages. In doing so, they create deeply relatable and transformative pieces that allow viewers to connect with the complexities of womanhood.

The exhibit also continues the tradition of using art to tell personal and powerful stories. While not every artwork in the exhibit is strictly biographical, each piece showcases the distinct narratives and perspectives of its creator. This exhibit not only honors women as exceptional artists but also highlights their accomplishments in various professional fields, such as architecture, literature, linguistics, jewelry design, business, and academia.

On the walls and on display is a wide range of artistic expressions and works—from graceful metal sculptures that symbolize both strength and beauty, to delicate floral watercolors, and surrealist paintings that challenge conventional narratives. Each piece represents the multifaceted nature of womanhood, exploring themes that range from profound and serious to playful and fierce. Together, they form a dynamic collection that celebrates the complexity and diversity of women’s experiences.
