UN General Assembly approves China-sponsored resolution on International Day for Dialogue among Civilisations

The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly today, Friday, unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by China to establish the International Day of Dialogue among Civilisations.

The resolution declares that all civilisational achievements are “the collective heritage of humanity”. It advocates respect for the diversity of civilisations and stresses the “crucial role of dialogue” among civilisations in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, improving human well-being and achieving collective progress.

The resolution calls for “equal dialogue and mutual respect” between different civilisations, which fully reflects the essence of the Global Civilisation Initiative. It also decided to designate 10 June as the International Day of Dialogue among Civilisations.

Introducing the draft resolution at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly, Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said that in the current context of multiple crises and converging challenges, the world has entered a new period of instability and transformation, placing human society once again at the crossroads of history.

In this context, China will propose establishing the International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations to fully realize the importance of dialogue among civilizations to “eliminate discrimination and prejudice, expand understanding and trust, promote people-to-people contact, and strengthen solidarity and cooperation”. This initiative injects positive energy into global efforts to address common challenges.

It demonstrates China’s “firm support for multilateralism” and the work of the UN, and highlights China’s responsibility as a power in a century of unprecedented change, the ambassador said.
