The Baguio Central University (BCU) Graduate School (GS) took center stage at the 13th University Research Colloquium last October 9, 2024, showcasing a remarkable array of research that illuminated the spirit of research collaboration and innovation through dissemination. With six studies presented—one completed research and five dynamic proposals—over 20 dedicated researchers came together to share their proposals, findings and insights, transforming knowledge into action. The event kicked off with an enthusiastic registration, where participants were greeted by Mr. Hilario A. Sanglay, RN, the CONSM Research Coordinator. Following a heartfelt opening prayer and the national anthem led by Engr. Lorelie S. Malit, attendees were welcomed by the emcee Ms. Princess Joy Moyaen from the College of Criminal Justice Education who introduced the panel of examiners and set the stage for an inspiring day of presentations.

Unveiling Transformative Research
The first part of the 2024 University Colloquium showcased compelling institutional research presentations that captivated participants. These included:
1. “The Baguio Central University Retirees: Their Journey After Retirements” by Dr. Perfecto M. Lopez, which provided an insightful exploration into the post-retirement experiences of the university’s retirees.
2. “Unveiling Transformation: The AGSHAN Program’s Impact Assessment through the Lens of Extension” presented by Ms. Arlene A. Mintas, offering a thorough evaluation of a program aimed at enhancing community engagement.
3. “Utilizing Community Needs Assessment for Baguio Central University’s Extension Program Planning,” also by Ms. Mintas, which underscored the critical role of understanding community needs in crafting effective extension programs.
4. “Challenges Encountered by NSTP Students in their Community Immersion” by Mr. Zoren N. Inowe, which illuminated the obstacles faced by students during their immersion activities and their implications for experiential learning.
A highlight of the colloquium was the recognition of the Senior High School Department , whose research earned both the Best Presenter and Best Paper awards, marking a significant achievement for the department.
A Collaborative Spirit
Mr. Karl Matthieu Rillera delivers the keynote message on behalf of the University President Dr. Margarita Cecilda B. Rillera.
The keynote message delivered by Mr. Karl Matthieu B. Rillera, Marketing Officer and MBA student in the Graduate School, inspired attendees to embrace the power of collaboration in research endeavors. He emphasized that “together, we transform knowledge into action,” aligning seamlessly with UNESCO’s vision of fostering a culture of shared ideas and dedication.
The afternoon session shifted focus to research proposals, highlighting innovative ideas. Topics ranged from assessing job satisfaction among university employees to evaluating quality assurance measures against accreditation standards, showcasing a diverse array of interests and expertise among researchers. Graduate School faculty members presented studies that supported the UN SDG-Based Responses to Global Challenges and innovative programs of the college.

3) “Macrosystems and Equity in Digital Education: Bridging the Divides in ASEAN Societies” presented by Dr. Edna Culbongan;
4) “Evaluating the Impact of Baguio Central University’s ETEEAP: Personal and Professional Development Career” by Dr. Josephine M. Aguirre and Dr. Lilian Pagulongan;
5) “Healthy Work-Life Balance Among Teachers” presented by Dr. Lourdes M. Trajano; and,
6) “Ethical Integration and Policy Development for Generative AI in Higher Education” by Dr.
Avilardo B. Leon and Dr. Genevieve B. Kupang.
Each presentation sparked thoughtful questions and discussions, particularly from our invited external panelist, Dr. Donnavila Marie B. Pan-Day of the University of Baguio, and two in-house panelists: Dr. Manion Alcantara, Graduate School Faculty and Senior High School Principal, and Ms. Priscilla De La Cruz of the College of Nursing. Their insightful contributions reinforced the collaborative spirit that defines BCU’s academic community.

Celebrating Achievements
As the day drew to a close, participants were recognized for their contributions with certificates awarded by Dr. Michael T. Sebullen, the Research and Development Office Director. The University colloquium not only showcased individual achievements but also highlighted the collective effort of researchers from both faculty and non-teaching staff committed to advancing knowledge and addressing societal challenges through research, instruction, community extension services, and publication.
The panelists, Dr. Gina Casi, Dr. Genevieve Kupang, and Dr. Criselda Felix, were recognized for their invaluable contributions with Certificates of Appreciation from Dr. Michael De Roxas, Director of the Research and Development Office, and Ms. Princess Moyaen, Research Coordinator of the College of Criminal Justice Education. It’s always great to see hard work and expertise recognized!

In conclusion, the 13th University Research Colloquium was a resounding success for Baguio Central University’s Graduate School. It served as a testament to the institution’s commitment to fostering research excellence and collaboration among scholars, paving the way for future innovations that will undoubtedly shape the academic landscape.

As we reflect on this enriching experience, we are reminded of UNESCO’s powerful words: “Together, we transform knowledge into action, building a future shaped by collaboration, dedication, and the power of shared ideas.” This colloquium exemplified that vision in every presentation and interaction, reinforcing BCU’s role as a leader in academic research and community engagement.

Genevieve Balance Kupang is an applied cosmic anthropologist and a certified cultural mapper, currently serving as BCU’s Dean of the Graduate School and International Relations Officer. She is a member of Grupo Kalinangan, focusing on cultural heritage conservation through innovative IT tools and services, building capacities, and leveraging support systems. As a board member of the World University Network of Innovation (WUNI)-Leaders, she fosters global collaboration. She explores the intersections of culture, arts, peace, justice, integrity of creation, interfaith dialogue, curriculum, and instruction.
