Flower-picking

Earth Day poem #1

This morning,

I picked flowers on the wayside

as the sun tarried with its light,

pinched off a stem with orange blooms

just dotting palm-sized leaves,

then a solitary hibiscus

queenly in yellow

and dainty buds in a shrub.

Rather than let them fall on the ground

and be swept among crusty leaves,

or worse, be unseen by regular passers

whose awe has thawed

I thought in a vase on the dining table

and another where I work

they will further blossom

making one heart sing

and a day differ.

Such loveliness

that their Creator lets hover

on His hand-picked child.
