Pressenza Press Agency Launches Malayalam Language Edition

In continuity with the drive to reach more and more people and to become an agency that fully reflects cultural diversity in its content, Pressenza will inaugurate its Malayalam newsroom this Thursday (24/10).

The celebration, which will begin at 5 pm (Indian time) will take place in person at the Jawahar Library in Kannur, in the state of Kerala, India, and will also be broadcast virtually to facilitate the participation of journalists, editors, publishers and friends of the agency in different parts of the world.

This new milestone follows the recent additions of Russian and Arabic newsrooms in 2024, enriching the agency’s daily content in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, German, Greek, and Catalan.

In particular, this new newsroom opens up the possibility of expanding information on events in the Indian subcontinent, especially those linked to the non-violent action of the very active peasant and student movements.

Malayalam (or Malabar) is a language spoken by some 40 million people and is one of the 22 official languages of India. It is the main language in the state of Kerala in southwest India, but there are also native speakers in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Lakshadweep and Malayalam-speaking communities in Singapore, Europe and North America.

Kerala, in turn, exhibits several interesting peculiarities. It has the lowest poverty in India, the highest Human Development Index (HDI), and the lowest birth rate, with an average of one child per woman, which is atypical for India, whose fertility rate is currently double.

Another distinctive feature is that it is also the most literate region in the country, with close to 96% of its population being literate. Pressenza will undoubtedly find many media partners and readers eager for a nonviolent and humanizing perspective on journalism.
