Protests in India: Doctor raped and murdered in Kolkata

In a shocking incident, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 14 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This case has not only shocked the medical community but also the entire nation, triggering a wave of protests.

Background and Crime

On the night of August 9, 2024, the 31-year-old doctor, whose name is withheld out of respect for the family, was in the midst of her shift at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, India.

The next morning, the doctor’s parents received an alarming call from the hospital. The vague message that their daughter was „sick” left the family clueless. When they arrived at the hospital, they were confronted with the shocking news that their daughter had allegedly committed suicide.

The cruel reality was revealed hours later when the parents saw their daughter’s disfigured body. What they saw contradicted any notion of suicide and pointed to a brutal crime. The young doctor, who had dedicated her life to healing others, had become a victim of an unimaginable act of violence.

Investigations and Cover-up Allegations

The incident sparked outrage in West Bengal and among the Indian medical community when the primary investigation report leaked, revealing the severity of the injuries that could not be mistaken for suicide. The parents were allegedly pressured to quickly cremate their daughter’s body and were reportedly offered financial compensation to not pursue the matter further, and to cover up the cause of her death, as well as the reason for her disfigured body.

A suspect was arrested, but there were concerns about the speed of the investigation and irregularities in the forensic examination. It was noted in the postmortem report that her injuries led her doctors and the victim’s parents to believe that this may be a case of gang rape.

Resignation

The institution’s director, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, resigned due to the protests, claiming to be a victim of a campaign. Within four hours of his resignation statement, he was transferred to another prestigious medical college, leading to further protests. Students blocked the gates of the college and denied entry.

The case was transferred to the country’s highest investigative body, the CBI, after the High Court lost confidence in the state authorities. Meanwhile, local authorities attempted to carry out renovations near the crime scene, which was stopped by students.

Reactions and Protests

Women in West Bengal organized a „Reclaim the Night” vigil on August 15th, India’s Independence Day. Minutes after the peaceful vigil began, there were violent disruptions by a group of thugs while the police withdrew. The attackers vandalized the hospital and injured some doctors and police officers. The police chief, who had previously urged the parents not to pursue the matter, blamed the media for the unrest.

A Wake-up Call

The case of the young doctor is a wake-up call for Indian society. It shows the urgent need not only to improve security measures in hospitals but also to have a broader discussion on combating violence against women. The voices of the protesters must not go unheard, and the demands for justice and reforms must be taken seriously. It also shows that despite legal reforms following the „Nirbhaya Case” of 2012, rape victims in India still face significant obstacles in accessing justice and support services

The nation mourns a talented young doctor whose life was tragically ended. In her memory and in pursuit of a more just and safer future, the Indian justice system must act.
