Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, a Palestinian born in Jabalia in 1973, is a pediatric consultant and currently the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
He is a leading figure in the health sector and is responsible for leading medical teams to provide medical services to the sick and the injured at Kamal Adwan Hospital.
On November 23, 2024, Abu Safia, while working inside the hospital, was injured by a bomb dropped by an Israeli drone and six pieces of shrapnel penetrated his thigh area and caused veins and arteries to rupture.
On Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced that the Israeli occupation army had arrested Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, and dozens of medical staff members of the hospital in North Gaza Governorate on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024.
Medical cadres working at Kamal Adwan Hospital confirmed that the occupation forces asked Dr. Hussam Abu Safia to go to the Indonesian Hospital with his staff. After the doctor left the hospital with his staff, the occupation asked him to go to the detention center at Al-Fakhoura School instead of going to the Indonesian Hospital with his staff.
Released detainees confirmed that Dr. Abu Safia was severely beaten with clubs and sticks by the Israeli occupation forces, who forced him to remove his clothes and dress in detainee clothing, and that the occupation used him as a human shield.
It is well known that torture methods in Israeli prisons, especially after October 7, 2023, are terrible and unprecedented.
More than 55 prisoners have been killed under torture in Israeli jails since October 7, 2023 to date, including Dr. Adnan Al-Barsh, Dr. Iyad Al-Rantisi and Dr. Ziad Al-Dalo.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s life is currently in grave danger and we fear his death under torture in Israeli occupation prisons.
With this appeal, we ask you to urgently intervene to free Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and his entire medical staff from Israeli prisons before he dies under torture.
