Students for Peace: Creating a Human Peace Symbol in Schools Across Greece

The action was the creation of a human Peace sign by the students and teachers of one or more classes or all the students and teachers, in the school yard, with a corresponding photo of the sign from a high point. It was suggested that the students hold a large sheet of white paper, thus protecting personal data (faces), and at the same time making the peace sign even more visible.

The goal was for the students to “take their stand for Peace”. An occasion to discuss Peace and Nonviolence before and after the action in the classroom, the importance of everyone’s participation in cultivating these two life values, and to be an inspiration for more actions in this direction. Respect for life, our fellow human beings, the environment, biodiversity and cultural and heritage wealth are foundations for Peace and Nonviolence.

A total of 26 schools from different regions of Greece participated in the action. The teachers, as we were informed, had the opportunity to discuss in the classroom, the values of Peace and Nonviolence, to create with their pupils other activities and to form the Peace sign in the courtyard of their school.

The participating schools were as follows:

Anafi Primary of Emporios, Thira
EEEEK of Livadia
Primary School of Megisti
14th Primary School of Kalamata
3rd Primary School of Kato Achaia
1 Experimental Primary School of Rhodes
3rd General Lyceum of Halandri
Special Primary School of Heraklion, Attica
17th Primary School of Rhodes
Primary School of Agios Georgios of Livadia
11th Primary School of Chalkida
39th Primary School of Patras
7th 6th Primary School of Nafpaktos
Primary School of Kato Tithorea
6th Primary School of Egaleo

1st Primary School of Mykonos
8th Primary School of Livadia

We warmly thank the teachers, students and pupils who embraced the initiative and who, by giving their time, energy and positive attitude, conveyed the message that is also mentioned in the Declaration of the 3rd World March for Peace and Nonviolence:

“to design a future where the life of every human being, will have meaning in harmony with themselves, with other people and with nature, in a world without wars and violence, to finally emerge from prehistory”.

The 3rd World March for Peace and Nonviolence.

15 years after the 1st World March for Peace and Non-Violence (2009), the reasons that inspired it have been strengthened rather than diminished. Today, the 3rd World March for Peace and Nonviolence is more necessary than ever. We live in a world where dehumanization is on the rise, where even the United Nations is no longer a reference point for resolving international conflicts. A world bleeding from dozens of wars, where the conflict of geopolitical issues between sovereign and emerging powers primarily affects civilian populations.
